Finding Your "Why"

Hello everyone! Today I am discussing a topic that is very near and dear to my heart, and introduced to me by my good friend, Tony Rocco. This is something we discuss at modeling workshops. I get loads of messages from aspiring models telling me that they want to become a model so badly. When I ask them “why,” many struggle to come up with a clear reason why they want to model. If you are wanting to become a successful model you need to have a clear idea of why you want to become one. Without a “why,” it will be difficult to stay true to yourself as a model and accomplish your goals. Allow me to explain.

Find Your Why
Why do you want to get started? Do you want to be the face of brands? Have you just undergone a major change in your appearance and want to flaunt it? Are you looking for something that might boost your confidence? Are you wanting to build a social media following? Does your family want to model? Are you maybe looking for a new way to pay bills? Modeling is a job like any other and it will likely feel exhausting at times. Having a Why can keep you going. Your Why does not have to be huge an inspirational, though having a “story” does help others connect to you. My original Why was “because I wanted to recover from a lifelong eating disorder.” I was a freshman in college and had just dropped to a dangerously low weight, when I met a fitness model. I was so fascinated by her job that I began researching fitness modeling and taking the necessary steps to get myself healthy enough to be in front of a camera. After a few years of recovery (though I have since relapsed) my Why changed. It became “because I love exploring this other side of me in front of a camera.” And then it became “because I love getting to meet and work with different people all over the US (and make my own schedule).” Now my Why is “because I love my career and this is what makes me happy and puts food on the table for my family.”

Your Why Can Keep You On Track
With every gig offer you should be checking in with yourself to make sure that that gig will serve you. If the gig isn’t right for you, you might feel “off” if you are keeping your Why in mind all of the time! I model for all of the styles that I choose to model for because they sit right with me. I do not shoot with brands or photographers that do not align with my values. If someone’s vibe does not line up with my Why it is an easy decision to turn down the gig. Working with people and brands who do not align with you can hurt your career. Ask yourself if each individual gig aligns with your Why and will push you forward.

Your Why Can Change (And It Probably Will)
Mine is constantly evolving because I myself am changing and growing as a model. Your Why probably won’t be static (but it could be!). This is why it is so important to constantly check in with yourself. I keep mine written down and change it! I also like to write it at the top of my “goals” list when I go to update that.

Do you know what your Why is? Are you having trouble coming up with one and are looking for some direction? Send me an email and let’s chat!
